Immigration Vs Public Schooling

    After reading part two of School: The story of American Public Education, you are now seeing a much bigger progression of the public educational system. Although the educational system still has its flaws, it has improved very much so from the early 19th century. During this era, we had an expansion of public schools. More and more schools were being built as education was now seen as a necessity and that each child needed to have an education. There was still an issue as to what form of the curriculum the school should be following. Apart from the blossoming for these new schools, American itself was also undergoing many changes and was seen as a place of great opportunity. Immigrants have noticed this as well and saw America and an American dream: a place where their children would have more opportunities then they did. With more immigrants and immigrant children emerging into the States an issue of where to place them had occurred. Although more schools were built, the issue came that thousands of immigrant children were coming in and there wasn’t enough space to place them. 

    There was a major issue of how teachers were going to educate these children due to a language barrier. Each child that was coming into the schooling system didn’t have an understanding of what was happening. They also had different cultures compare to children from America. The educational system had to start from the beginning when it came to teaching these children; starting with the basic from hygiene to adapting to the American lifestyle. The children were enforced to refuse their way of life from their home country and simulate to the way of life in American. They were taught that English was the only and superior language they would need to speak, read, and write. Immigrant children unfortunately were pushed to back when it came to the American educational system. With so many changes in the schooling system, nothing improved to help immigrant children receive a better education. The schooling system began to adapt the IQ tests in which a child at the age of five would have to take a test to determine where the child would place in the schooling system. This form of testing determines the path a child would stay on; immigrant children did poorly on these test they were placed in a learning environment where it would be catered to working in jobs that had little to do with education, while others that scored better on the test would have to opportunity to continue an education in college. These forms of testing continue until it was proven that IQ testing was wrong and truly didn’t work. Many missed opportunities for children who were stuck with their IQ scores. After discussing this section with my classmates, we all could agree that immigrants paved the way for the educational system. Immigrants are the reasons for the innovation of the American public schooling system. Overall they are the reason America went under an amazing transformation.

The Common School Era:

 After reading the first section of the story of American Public Education, it gives in insight into how the schooling system started in the eighteenth century and how it began to blossom by the nineteenth century. Although schooling wasn’t much of a concern during the 18th century, parents still wanted their children to have the ability to read. Agriculture was the main concern and it how most made a living. They didn’t need an education to know how to farm and produce products for the community. The 18th century did have schooling but was were very limited and the school would be miles away. Schooling also wasn’t free and wasn’t opening to everyone. Only the Rich and White would be able to attend school.
